Marketa Burnett

Director and Principal Investigator

Dr. Marketa Burnett is currently an Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Sciences & Africana Studies at the University of Connecticut. She received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research program explores the mechanisms that support Black girls’ thriving across various social contexts. Incorporating qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches, Dr. Burnett examines Black family processes, and in particular, how Black caregivers (residential and non-residential) actively contribute to the positive development of their daughters through the use of cultural assets and strategies. In her work, she intentionally partners with Black girls, families, and communities in the co-construction of knowledge to accurately represent their stories in a world that has historically excluded them.
